Grande famille libanaise dont l'origine remonte au 15ème siècle.
Le patronyme "Chidiac" vient du mot "archidiacre" qui est la déformation du mot latin "archidiaconus". Il a été formé à partir du mot "diaconus" (diacre). Le mot "diacre" vient du grec "diakonos" qui veut dire serviteur.
Titre de l'église catholique "archidiacre" a été arabisé en "al-chidiak" (الشدياق). A l'usage, le pronom "al" s'est estompé pour devenir Chidiac. L'état-civil libanais conserve toutefois le pronom "al" lorsque le nom est indiqué en arabe.
La généalogie des "Chidiac" a été établie par le chroniqueur et érudit Cheikh Tannous al-Chidiac (1791-1861) الشيخ طنُوس الشدياق, frère du célèbre écrivain Ahmad Farès al-Chidiac (1804-1887), dans son ouvrage en deux volumes Kitab Akhbar al A'yane fi Jabal Loubnane (كتاب أخبار الأعيان في جبل لبنان).
